Tesla Gen 3 Sedan

9 Feb

In June 2013, I rendered what was then rumored to be Tesla’s affordable and compact model to rival the Nissan Leaf. Soon however, there were reports that the car, code-named Gen 3 Sedan, well, will be a sedan. So this is my new attempt in rendering the Tesla C-segment sedan. I referred heavily from the Pininfarina-design Tata Pr1ma concept, which I really like. I’ve lowered and stretched the Pr1ma so to make it look sleeker and meaner. I still think looks a bit too tall.

I feel that the side profile was kind of “flat” and could have used just one or two more design flourishes. The rear reminds me of the (current) Honda Accord Inspire/Acura TL, and that’s not a good thing. I hope Tesla doesn’t commission Tata or Pininfarina’s help on the Gen 3 project…

Still, great work, as usual.

Thanks Shawn. Pininfarina has designed many classics before.

Incredibly well made, I’ve browsed all your Tesla renderings. Only the pick-ups look a bit faked since they kind of lack the panel seam between the passenger cabin and flatbed. How they’d make that in one piece I’m not sure.

Again, amazingly good and cool to fantasize about.

Thanks Reluctant Engineer, Honda Ridgeline has a unibody design without the gap between the cabin and bed too.

Cool I didn’t know that, I’ve only noticed such large/long panels on mercedes in Europe. I think both your Gen3 renders look very probable. This is more budget and the hatchback is really smooth and a BMW and Audi contender if it looks like that. I’ve also been wondering if a Gen3 could be more like a Prius station wagon, probably shorter, but with that general wedge shape.

I expect that the Tesla Generation III Sedan will likely still have a liftback, like the Tesla Model S. Since the primary competition of the car is to be the BMW 3-Series, and they now have the Gran Turismo Hatchback version, it will fit in the market segment just fine. The GIII will end up being multiple vehicles, so a coupe, a sport hatch, a wagon, and a crossover/SUV will probably all make an appearance. Thanks for your renderings! As you may be able to tell, I’m a big fan of Tesla Motors! Keep up the good work!

I agree with Red Sage, the Model 3 sedan should more have a similar look to the Audi A5 (still one of my favorite looking cars) or the BMW 3GT. Would be great to see a rendering like that, if ever you need inspiration for what to do next.
